Do You Lose When You Forgive?
by Natacha Cann on October 14th, 2014

One of the main reasons some people find it hard to forgive is because they feel as though they would end up losing. In other words, they would be giving the other person a “free pass,” letting the person off the hook, or downplaying what the person did to them. This sense of injustice makes it harder to forgive someone. The feeling is, they’ve won and you’ve lost. But, do you really lose when you forgive? It depends on your perspective.

If you continue to put your focus on what you think the other person is getting away with, then yes, you will always feel like the loser. But, once you realize that forgiveness is not about what you give up, it’s about what you gain, you will know there are no losers when it comes to forgiving others. You gain a sense of freedom because you are no longer held hostage by anger, pride, and resentment. You also gain a lightened heart because once you start your journey to forgiveness, a burden will be lifted.
But, how do you get over the sense of injustice when forgiving others? You have to know and trust that God will be the final judge and jury over your situation.  Psalm 37:28 says, “For the Lord loves justice.” That tells us that regardless of what we think, no one gets a free pass. We will all be held accountable for what we do and what we fail to do. Let God handle the justice and you work on forgiving.
